Played hookie from work this morning and managed to see a few birds and a pile of deer. Had one bird working towards me then went the other direction about 100 yards out. Figured he saw a real bird, got spooked, or something else.
This best thing was my friend took his son and they doubled up on two Gobblers. Wish I had picts, but it was worthy of a mention. Anytime you take someone and can get a double, especially with your son is truly and awesome day.

After several close calls this year and a gobbler being inside 15 yards earlier in the week I was finally able to close the deal. Setup on a spot till about 9 on Saturday with no luck and not hearing anything. I decided to move towards a spot I had setup earlier in the season. There was a swamp to my right and old planted pines to my left. The pines are thinned and probably about 10-15 years old, so there isn't much undergrowth. I was moving very slow to my "spot" and listening when I lucked up and heard a gobble in the pines probably 150 yards away or so. I immeidiately hit the pines in the direction I heard the gobble. Went about 30 yards in a made a yelp with my mouth call. The bird answered and I sat down on tree. After about ten minutes I called again and the bird answered, this time to my right. About a minute later another bird answered behind me from the swamp. At this point I thought I was in heaven and was wishing I had another hunter with me. Well a few more minutes went by and I clucked one time and the first bird answered and he was close. I had already shifted my position to the right so I would be able to shoot at either bird. Within about another minute I caught movement and the first bird that gobbled was moving within range and strutting. He strutted three times but would only go into strut for a few seconds and would keep moving my direction. I could easily see down one row of pines and partically down the row he was on. However I knew if he stepped into my row I would have a perfect shot or if he kept coming down the row he was on I would have a perfect shot within the next few trees he passed. Turns out he came about another 5 to 10 yards and stepped into the row I was on and I pulled the trigger.
He was a nice bird had a 9 1/2" beard and 1" spurs. A great bird for the first of the season for me. Hopefully there will be another for me or for someone I'm calling for.
