When I first moved to Tallahassee I rode my bike down to Wacissa Springs. You should have seen the looks I got from that bunch of good ol' boys when I showed up in my skin tight lycra shorts. It was a little scary. :D

That's funny you mentioned Wacissa. Here's one of ----- a guy ----(edit by admin) and his girlfriend from July 4th. Those puppies bounce nice whenthey're running down kayakers in the airboat.

very well said Cueball, i was down at the Wacissa every weekend as a kid. We would have a great time canoeing down the river. But, the airboats have always been ridiculous their. They will see how close they can get to you. That river has the largest concentration of REDNECKS this side of the Mississippi. They have no regard for the environment or mother nature, I feel your pain.

The Wakulla River has got to be the most scenic and wildlife saturated river in north Florida, maybe the whole US. I am afraid that development will eventually ruin it along with lots of other rivers in the area. The docks and homes have proliferated in the years since my first exploration of the Wakulla river. It is by far my favorite river that I have ever been on, especially the section between the fence and TNT. It is sad to me that the lot owners feel the need to place a dock (that 2 people use about 6 times a year) posted with a bright red no trespassing sign, and then yell out to the motorboats to slow down so as not to damage a Manatee. Man,,,, that's the pot calling the kettle black. I wish that the state would run everyone out and buy all the land as a wildlife easement and rip all the homes and docks out. I don't think that any-ONE elitist butthead should own such a prime wildlife area, but rather the state as a whole should own it and take care of it.

On to my second favorite river, the Wacissa. I took my wife this past Sunday July 19, in my Old Town lime green 2-seater kayak. We were on the river about 4 hours, and not one moment of it without the never-ending thunderous roar of @**&% *&@@# *&^%**# airboats. There must have 20+ of them. As soon as one would get to its destination and shut down the 454 cubic inch noise-maker, another would crank up and disturb the whole %^#@ county. I hate airboats and I wish they were all piled up and burned. The only people that like airboats are the people in them. Everyone else on the face of the earth hates them. The abundant airboat travel has run trails through the grass at the river head near the swimming area. It had been a few years since my last visit to the Wacissa river, the first thing that I noticed was the tremendous loss of aquatic vegetation pretty much everywhere. we saw no alligators or evidence that there were any there at all. I'm sure they were just hiding from all the %$#&@ noise. We did see a curious river otter and one of the largest freshwater turtles that I have ever seen.

You better go and experience all the local rivers while you can, because they won't be here forever, I don't think that they will last another 15 years the way the last 10 have been.

P.S. have you ever noticed that over 85% of the drink cans that are polluting public waters are beer cans. Lots of beer cans in the Wacissa the other day. FWC man sitting in his truck running the A/C at the swimming hole when we left.

we never could find a manatee, but did manage to see a gator. I didn't get a shot of it, but I think my dad did. I will post it if he did.

Saturday morning I took my dad and brother on a yak journey on the Wakulla River. It was an awesome day and not too much wind for the kayaks. I took my Heritage and rented a couple more from Rob at TNT. It was great to do a little kayaking without the fishing gear for once and enjoy the scenery.
