Until last year we had been in an extended drought, so the ducks that were here were concentrated. Last year we had so much rain that the ducks were scattered. Also last year was the first year that permenant blinds were illegal on the Tallahassee area lakes. There are many people that had to re-learn how to hunt using boat blinds.

The best all round decoy for around here would be coots, second would be ring necks, followed by blue wing teal.

The best $25.00 that you could spend would be to join United Waterfowlers FL. Lots of information can be learned from its members. Also don't forget about DU and Delta, but for Florida hunting info join United Waterfowlers FL.

So unlike others that compalin about how bad it is out there on the lakes, get out and scout, and try duck hunting. Just remember that there there is a lot to learn, and you learn new things every year, be it your first year, or your 25th year!

RE: New to duck hunting

Thank you ill have to check it out.

RE: New to duck hunting

I notice you mentioned having classes -- if you are at FSU or TCC or FAMU you might check out the FSU Ducks Unlimited Chapter. I agree with earlier posts about Tally area duck hunting being a tougher and tougher thing. I travel a lot and do ok but put a lot of miles on vehicles.

RE: New to duck hunting
Obsessed (7/17/2009)
Also if you know about anywhere close to Talllahassee that is looking for members on a leasefor deer and turkey that wont break the bank that be awesome. The decoys that most use are ringnecks and coots. We always throw ringnecks and a few woodies and hope we have plenty of coots swimming around us. Ringnecks are good decoying ducks and that's mostly what you will find along with the woodies on Jackson, Iamonia, and Miccosukee. Last year it seemed like there were several Blue Bills around so you have to be aware if you are shooting at them or ringnecks. The limits are different and they look very similar in the air.

RE: New to duck hunting

Well im thinkin about Jackson and Iamonia. I will def be able to scout as I only have school twice a week and I have a couple of friends who are going to be able to go with me Lord willin. They had pretty good luck this past year with some woodies. What kind of decoys would you reccomend investing in. Also if you know about anywhere close to Talllahassee that is looking for members on a lease for deer and turkey that wont break the bank that be awesome. Thanks for the replies.

RE: New to duck hunting

It's hard to say what this year will be like. However, if you get out and scout early you will probably have a good shot at success. If you find a good spot on public lands, you can be sure that someone else has their eye on it as well. Be sure to get to the landing very early and get setup well before legal shooting time. I would also recommend that you have a couple other spots near by incase someone else is in your place.... It's happened to us all. We thought we had a good blind or spot and then you roll up to find someone else beat you to it.

Most lakes will be very crowded the first couple weekends, but it will die off after that. If you have the time you can probably do well if you keep moving with the birds and don't hunt the same few spots like most of us.

What lakes were you thinking about trying?
RE: New to duck hunting

I really appreciate it. Our area is getting tougher to hunt every year if you are hunting the main public waters. More hunters with less water due to the few years of drought equals too much pressure. It really makes it harder if you want to have a successful hunt. You have to put in more time for scouting and for some of us that isn't something we can do that often. If you have time to scout you'll probably do okay.

The main areas for public hunts are Lake Jackson, Lake Miccosukee, and Iamonia. Depending on which lake you target make sure you read the current motor restrictions. Micco, Iamonia and Carr all have restrictions. Micco has a 10 hp limit while the other two have electric motor only restrictions.

The ducks you mostly find on our lakes are ringnecks, and wood ducks. Ringnecks are good decoying ducks. Wood ducks are easier to target if you know where they are feeding or roosting. If you have a canoe/kayak or access to smaller creeks and ponds that you can wade you should be able to find some woodies around.

If you are willing to travel to Lake Seminole you might up your chances of getting a mixed bag of ducks. However I've never hunted over there so I have no idea about the lake.

If you have several grand to throw down on a plantation duck pond lease you'll shoot more than you need. Most of the ducks in our area will stick to the private ponds once the season opens due to public pressure.

RE: New to duck hunting

Well appreciate the response but not exactly what i was picturing. haha If you have anything else though that would be great.

RE: New to duck hunting

dont do it, ducking hunting here has gotten worse and worse over the last few years, too many hunters and not near enough ducks, i've been duck hunting this area for 15 years and believe me its just not worth it anymore. just my .02

New to duck hunting

Hey guys I am a turkey and deer guy.
