After the success I had a few weekends ago, my friend was itching to go out and catch something. He does very little salt water fishing, and has never caught a redfish before. He heard from his boss that there are some trails you can take that would take you out to salt water and fish, if you were willing to make the long trek and had a mountain bike to get you there. So we decided to give them a shot and packed up our bikes and poles. We rode approximately 3 miles before we found salt water. We tried a couple of areas with no luck, so we kept riding further. At around 4.3 miles we came across an area with a lot of moving water. I told my friend "This is were you are going to catch your redfish." Sure enough on his first cast, he hooked up with a nice 22 inch red.

He was using a gold spoon when he caught the red. I put on a redfish magic, 1/4 ounce with a red head and electric chicken color soft bait. After a few casts, I hooked into a really nice red. I was fighting him for a little while when, bam, my line broke. Go figure. We kept fishing there, had a few more hook ups, but it was not in the cards for us to land anymore fish.

We seemed to discover a pretty good little spot. If you are willing to make the trek, it is worth it. I can't wait to go back out there and try to get some more.

Kayak/Canoe advice

I am looking into purchasing either a Kayak or a Canoe-something I can throw on top of my roof rack on my SUV, and most of the time use by myself-but if possible to bring my girlfriend with me from time to time. I primarily want to use it for saltwater fishing, possibly some fresh water fishing and sometimes just to cruise around. I have heard stories of fishing in kayaks and hooking a good size red fish or something bigger and having the fish drag you a good ways...is this true? Any advice for me and where is the best place to find a new/used canoe/kayak?
kayak or small boat fishing/bottoms Rd.

Can anyone tell me if there is any decent fishing out of bottoms rd. this time of yr. I was just down there last week and it all looked fine. Not to mention sea grass everywhere due to the boats putting the booms in chopping it all up. I didn't figure that it would get here this soon but it is definitely here. The Mitchells had a good setup for the Captain's Meeting and weigh-in. Ran into Aubill, BK, Suber, and the Callaghans.
Saturday morning we decided to launch at Mashes Sands at 4th light. The wind wasn't too bad but it got hot out there real quick.

The water was up pretty good so I camp out on a submerged oyster bar looking for a flatty. First blood for the day was a mid slot red which ended up being the story of my weekend. Nothing over 25 inches.

Finally found my flatty which measured at 2.30 lbs which was good enough for first.

After the weigh-in Saturday, we tried our luck for the afternoon bite. I caught a few more reds on topwater, but nothing in the 6-7 lb range because that's what we needed to compete with the reds already on the board.

Glad FCKA made out like bandits

Grouper fishing 4/17/10

Talked about going inshore but I got a call from my Dad last Wednesday saying he was itching to go offshore. He said he knew a guy that was available and once I looked at the weather, I was sold. We had room for six, so my Dad called a couple of his buddies and I called my bartender Millertime. Seas were predicted at 1-2 or less than one foot so we were feeling pretty psyched on Friday. My Dad said the wind was howling at SGI Thursday and Friday but I promised him that NOAA was never wrong on a weekend weather prediction.

Saturday morning we met up, loaded the coolers and took bets on whether the wind was going to cooperate or not. The ride out was pretty smooth and once we got about 10 miles out the water really started to get slick. Around 9:30 we got to around 70 feet and started looking for bait. It took us a while to load up the live well but we ended up with enough good sized squirrel fish and pig fish to give us just about all we needed.

Took off to around 90 feet to try our luck. Since Dad sponsored the trip, we decided to let him toss the first one down.

Spot one and two didn't do much for us, so me and Millertime thought that a beer might help the bite.

Turns out the beer really didn't help too much, but 120 feet of water did. Had a lot of grouper come up about twenty feet off the bottom, but all we got to the boat was a half eaten bait. Fortunately it didn't take too long to get some slime on the boat.

We landed a couple shorts and some nice snapper, but the bite didn't really turn on until late afternoon. We hooked up with a couple reds but got our limit of gags in about 20 minutes on our next to last stop. The good thing is that the majority of the fish were quality fish. I wish I had some bent rod shots but when we were on them, it was on fire. Not a lot of time for pics.

Overall, the sees were ridiculously calm all day which made for a great ride back after we got tired of high fiving.

Awesome day of Meat fishing!

FCKA Classic

It was that time of the year again, so Thursday after work we made a caravan down to the coast for a little pre-fishing. As everybody in the SE knows it was raining like cats and dogs but it all passed in time for us to enjoy the sunset and a cold beverage for the ride down.
Friday morning the wind was blowing pretty good with blue bird skies so we tried to make a gameplan expecting similar conditions for Saturday as well. After Millertime's blood alcohol level returned to its normal level .08, we hit the road to do some scouting. The water was super skinny with the NW wind but I managed to find some topwater trout.

Mullet were all over the place and I got some mid morning entertainment from a dolphin feeding frenzy in 12 inches of water.

Spot A didn't do much for us, so we packed up the Millerlite and headed for spot B. It was a good idea because bait was everywhere and the trout and redfish decided to show up too. It was windy as hell, so the anchor got a lot of use. In the first hour I landed some nice trout and reds so I stopped for the day before I really regretted fishing Spot B the day before the tournament. Biggest trout at 22, biggest red was 32.

Millertime decided to get in on the action on a double hookup with Chris.

Tourney day was a lot slower for me. I got a 19 inch trout before 8 and the rest of my day was a skunk. Millertime cleaned up with reds and trout but couldn't find a flounder Still had a great time though. Congrats to all the winners and thanks to all the sponsors and all those who made the tournament possible. See you next year.
St.Marks river fishing

Will be moving to St, Marks in a few weeks and was wondering if anyone knows of any hotspots up the river. We didn't really tear them up, but we had a good time and managed to land some fish.

The best part was that I was able to take my brother down. My brother is from Idaho and hasn't ever even seen a redfish, and would you know it he was able to land one. He lost another that was a real nice fish at the yak, but all in all it was a decent day. We didn't have the luck that the others had there recently, but we managed 3 reds, and one flounder. All caught on Gulp!. The reds didn't have any size, but the flounder was about 16". We probably would have stayed longer if we could, but it was a good few hours on the water.

Thanks to MillerTime for letting us borrow his Perception.

Mac Attack

I went out fishing yesterday in a friends 19' Key West out of Alligator Point 6:30am temperature was 49. It was a little windier than I was hoping but for some reason there was only light chop no waves. I caught a red on a top-water and he shook loose at the boat, but I looked out on the gulf and saw flocks of birds tightly bound diving in 3 groups so I put a 5" gold spoon and headed out first cast in the school of crashing fish caught a 36" tarpon but drifted away from birds so put the spoon out an trolled by the group at 5mph and caught a nice Spanish Mackerel. I did this many more time with similar result I caught 12 fish all good size but only kept 4 because that was all I needed and it doesn't taste good after being frozen. Didn't have camera on a the boat sorry but here is back at my house:

http://s642.photobucket.com/albums/uu141/dpfoyo06/

Redfishing 10-25-2009

Because there are gonna be some Redfish calling in sick tomorrow with sore mouth. Ever have one of those days, when you just can't get enough and you've already had too much? Well Jason and myself started out with a little fog rolling on the water and a nice cool NW wind.

Jason on the other side of the dock as we drifted with the wind at pre-dawn.

Jason standing and casting as the sun comes up in the East.

Water was calm, high tide and going out, and it was starting to look like a bluebird day as we made one drift and were starting to think it just wasn't gonna happen. I just told Jason these fish were going to be nine o'clock fish and just wouldn't bite til then.

But one decided to prove me wrong at 7:55

Things were starting to look up and then just ten minutes later I landed this nice 29" Red after it made six strikes at the Super Spook on two consecutive cast before it got the Super Spook to fit its mouth right. As I set the hook the handle on my reel started spinning around. I had stripped the threads on the handle. It would pick up line without tension so I would rear back on the fish, and reel in the slack. Not easy when your fighting a 29" Redfish, but it worked out. One rod down.

Me with a puny 29 incher (added by Jason)

We encountered a boat doing the old reverse drift in our direction so we pulled an "Ivan" and went back the other way. We picked up a couple of small trout, and Jason and myself had a few rod malfunctions and quickly recovered. As Jason just finished fixing his line situation, I happened on a school that was inching its way west behind Jason. I hooked one and started yelling at Jason to throw towards me.

But then Jason missed his and picked up another and we had our first double hook up of the day.

I picked up this 27" Red.......at 9:11

As I take a picture of mine, I hear Jason yelling about how big his red is, and I make two cast and lose and sling my plug off twice. I was down one more rod as the line broke in two, half way though the spool. I'm trying to keep an eye on the school and Jason's wanting a picture, but all i can hear is ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME! So I head back and photograph this puny tiny 36" Red that Jason picked up out of the school on topwater. By the way we caught all these fish on Super Spooks.

And another of Jason's

Well after we do a photo session, the school is lost, but not for Jason as I think he picked up one more, and me, a big NADA! But the future was looking bright.

I picked up this 25" Red as we paddled about a mile offshore to a sand bar. She hit as she was working a school of mullet and I through her off her game.

We paddled back in, met some nice folks and sat on a bank bull jiving and tossing cut mullet into a sand hole as Jason reeled in a 30" Red, and couple of 20" trout, and some smaller reds, when low and behold school was in session yet again. I paddled out and was met with bronze beauty and was surrounded by Reds. I am asking the community for help with a fishing tournament. On October 22, 2005, Kristina Nicole Flatt, a Leon high school graduate and my little sister, died suddenly at the age of twenty-one from an adverse reaction to a prescription drug. Krissi was uniformed of the risks associated with her prescribed medication. Parents and young adults should be better informed of the side effects associated with over the counter drugs as well as prescribed drugs. That is why my mom, my older sister and I have created a foundation called the Krissi Flatt Foundation (also known as tkff). The goal of tkff is to broaden prescription drug awareness through public outreach about the effects of prescription drugs and their interactions with other drugs and substances.

This is a picture of our family. This was taken the day my little sister died. She is the one in the middle wearing the black tank top. My little sister Krissi and I were giving our older sister a baby shower. Krissi died a few hours later. Our mom, Jane Munroe, is in the middle wearing the white button up shirt. She has focused all her energy on finding ways to prevent other parents from getting the exact same phone call she got from a nurse in the emergency room. We are just your all American family and together we are trying to create more efficient ways of informing patients of their medications and their possible interactions with other medications, both prescribed and over the counter.

The foundation has decided to host an annual fishing tournament in order to raise funds for the tkff projects. On October 18, 2008, tkff hosted our first annual tournament; however, we were unable to gain enough support through community sponsorship to cover the costs; the foundation ended up going in the hole as a result. In order for us to be able to host our Second Annual Krissi Flatt Fishing Tournament, we have to secure at least $15,000.00 in sponsors from the community. The Krissi Flatt Fishing Tournament will take place on October 24, 2009 at the Carrabelle Boat Club, if we are able to secure the sponsors.

I am hoping to update the tkff website as soon as possible. I just graduated from FSU with a degree in Information Technology, so I am the one responsible for maintaining both the http://www.tkff.org and the http://www.krissiflattfishing.com websites. I have two little girls, one of which is disabled, and its summer so you can imagine how much time I have to be the webmaster right now. But they will both be updated by the middle of next week.

If you are interested in knowing more about my little sister http://myspace.com/foreverkrissiflatt and I have written about her entire life and the day of her death. It's important to me that her death does not go un-noticed. She was your all American girl. She was a family girl with big dreams for changing the world and she loved, loved, loved to go deep sea fishing.

Below are two pictures of Krissi deep sea fishing. She caught this tarpon all on her own. She said it took her at least three hours to finally get him on the boat.

Please, if you know anyone that is interested in becoming a sponsor or is interested in fishing the tournament, or both, could you please email me at info@tkff.org?

Thanks so much for your support Tallahassee!!!

Sincerely,

Kasi Thursby

Lanark scalloping

I've been out of town both weekends since scallop season started, so I've been anxious to try my luck. Heard lots of bad reports about st. marks and heard they were small at st. joe, so we decided to try lanark. Millertime and and his better half met me and my better half around 9:00 at the ramp, we headed towards Turkey Point. We found some real nice ones in 4-5 feet of water. No thunderstorms and the wind laid down for us. No complaints from me.

St. Marks Lighthouse 6/5/09

This past Friday I took the advice of WaltDawg, cyGraphics, and Lunkerbrother and headed to the Lighthouse at St. Marks. I got there around 6am at low tide and started fishing the flats. I worked my way to the point, but still no luck. I followed the path down to the trail on the other side of the boat ramp and went to its point. After about 5 or so casts I hooked up on a 18 inch trout.

I then proceeded to cast back into the same area that I had the hook up with the first one in, hoping that there would be a school of trout in that area. Luckily my intuition was correct and I hooked up with another nice 19 inch trout.

I was using the Strike King Redfish Magic in the electric chicken color to catch both these trout.

All in all, despite the huge storm that rolled in that forced me to take cover for about 20 minutes, it was a great day of fishing. Thanks again to WaltDawg, cyGraphics, and Lunkerbrother for the advice on where to go.

Rock The Dock

Fished the first annual Rock the Dock this past weekend with Millertime, cygraphics, and skunky. It was a two day tournament, so I new that we were gonna have to pace ourselves. Went down after work Friday afternoon to the Captain's Meeting and saw alot of familiar faces. There was a good turnout and I could tell that the organizers put in a lot of time and hard work in order to accommodate all the anglers.
Saturday morning, we all launched at Oyster Bay after stopping by the Mashes Sands BP for a sausage biscuit or two and some much needed hydration. Millertime and Joe headed North and we headed East. The wind was blowing a little more than anticipated. I threw mostly topwater and Chris threw a DOA jerk bait. Chris gets us started with a keeper flounder but looses a larger one. We get a call from Millertime saying that Joe landed a 25 inch cobia on 14 lb mono. Not quite a keeper, but still a hell of a ride in a kayak.

The bite slowed down at slack tide so we decide to camp out on a oyster bar for a few.

I see a pontoon boat in the distant coming obnoxiously close to our fishing spot and I hear Uncle Dan holler "you boys want a beer", so we took him up on his offer.

We fished for a little while longer and caught reds, trout and flounder, but the midday sun got us off the water earlier than we expected.

Got up Sunday morning and met Aubill at Ocklocknee Bay.

None of us had really caught any good tournament fish, so we needed to fish pretty hard. The wind was laid down, so Bill and I both threw topwater plugs. He missed a couple nice trout and I got a 23 inch red. Near the end of the incoming, I land a 22 inch trout hoping that it might be big enough to place.

About an hour later, Chris knocks me off the board with a 23 incher.

The highlight of my tournament came on the paddle back to the landing. I fished for 3 hours looking for flounder loosing five jig heads on the oyster bars and I finally get a strike. The drag starts screaming, so I thought I had a spanish. About five minutes later, this 33 incher boils and continues to put up one hell of a fight.

Thanks Bill, for being there for the photo op.

All in all, it was a fun tourney. Congrats to Chris, Liam, Suber, Jason and everyone else who placed and got a money check. Hope to do it again next year.

Amberjack

I love science.

Another professional hit

When a few of you last saw me, my buddy and I were heading in 30 mph winds to fish the bay side of the Plantation. As you see, we survived that day, limited out with 2 24"inch reds and released 6 others, 4 of which were 21 to 22 inches. In addition, when we left they were still biting, but our bellies were rumbling and we had two fish to clean. All in all it was an awesome day in adverse conditions and will make a heckuva story to tell my grandkids.

Well, I made it back to the gulf this past weekend. I showed up to Shell Point at 6:15 Friday afternoon with a good friend of mine and my 14' river boat in tow. With two hours of day light and a slight chop, we headed out. This was my first trip to Shell, so it took me a good 30 minutes to navigate the channel and learn the oyster bars, but we finally got to fishing. My buddy with me had never caught and speckled trout but managed to do so on his first cast. For the next hour, it was on. We caught 20 trout and a multitude of lady fish. Only 4 trout made the box, 15", 18", 19", and 21".

Saturday morning, we hooked up with a charter boat friend of mine in Carabelle to land some freezer fillers. Long story short, the 6 of us left with 12 gags, 3 red grouper, and 40 black sea bass for a total of 220 lbs of fish. We caught our limit of gags by 9:30 am.

All in all, great fishing and great weather. To top things off, some good friends of mine won king mackeral division of the tournament held at Sea Quarters.

If all holds true, we will be back in the gulf to kick more *** in about 28 days.

St. Marks 5/16/09

The weatherman (Millertime) called me this morning and said that the wind was going to be right for throwing topwater, but mother nature had other plans for the FCKA folks. Cygraphic and I get down to the lighthouse greeted by a dozen or so yakkers trying to rethink their fishing strategy.
Suber says, "ya'll should just sit on the long bar and you should catch all the fish you need."

Cygraphics, myself and a bunch of other folks head for the East River and we start catching fish on the drift to some of the outer bars. We play with the ladyfish for a few and Chris lands a keeper trout. A few minutes later I land a 14 inch flattie, and start thinking that a slam should be pretty easy to find.

Even though we were catching fish on the flats, we decide to hit the bars looking for scavenging redfish and trout.

Turns out that the best bite of the day was behind us and the rest of the morning was just exercise. Congrats to Big Irish on the win. I've two fisted beer in one hand and Jack in the other, but never a trout and a redfish. It was good to see everybody again.

Nice turnout guys.

Forgot the paddle, but made do

Wetnap called me lastnight and said he wanted to sneak in a quick fishing trip while he was still in town. He did pretty good at the Harbor the other day, so we met this morning at Sun and Sand. While we were unloading, ran into Tallypacker, and realized I forgot to strap the paddle back onto my yak after I stripped it to patch a hole last week.
I started calling around to see if anybody was close with a spare and Suber said he was at the house and didn't mind helping out. Wetnap called while I was in Crawfordville and said AH was full of boats so we decided to head to Oyster Bay. The wind was blowing pretty good at AH, but this is what OB looked like.

We both started throwing topwater and and Wetnap got first blood on a Papa dog.

We chased a school around for a few minutes, but nothing else would bite. We continued to fish the grassline and I layed into a nice overslot fish but he shook my weedless spoon at the yak. I was pissed. We move on and a airboat cruises by us and camps out on a oyster bar for five minutes then takes off. Still pissed, we start talking about our spot was ruined. Next cast, I catch a 25 incher, airboat somewhat redeemed.

We head back to the landing and some lady asks me if its ok to keep sea turtles because some idiot had caught two and they were in the bed of his truck?!? Trying not to kick his ***, we politely removed the turtles and put them back in the water. Leaving me with the conclusion that some people should not be allowed to reproduce.

I head back to Suber's to return the paddle and he had gone to run an errand. He must have been in a hurry because he forgot to take his lunch with him. Cameron must have called, I guess. It didn't look very appetizing anyway, so no harm no foul.

Wade Fishing near Tallahassee

Hello all,

I am a student here in Tallahassee attending FSU. We launched at Bald Point to fish the incoming tide. The snots were biting early, sorry no pics of those, but we made our way towards Chaires and the game fish decided to show up.

We were hoping for something a bit bigger and Millertime started hollering. He measured at 26.999 with a pinched tail.

We ended up with a few more reds and made it back to the mouth of OB to fish the out going and the drum and sheepies started biting.

The shrimp ran out, so I got on 98 and headed west. I met PopsDawg at the house, loaded up his Ocean Kayak and launched on the west end of the island. The wind laid down pretty good, so I hoped to sight fish for reds, but none seen. We decided to target their spotted cousins. I started throwing Fish Bites and he threw DOA Shrimp.

The trout turned on and I ended up with a few over 20 inches.

Had a sunset dinner at the Blue Parrot with a few Corona's and some oysters. Got back to Tally at 10:00 to enjoy a nightcap. Headed to Econfina in the morning to do some non-kayak fishing. Put a few clicks on the ole' odometer this weekend, but well worth it.

St. Marks early morning fishing

Millertime picked me up at the house for an early morning fishing trip. The water was real low and dead calm early. I tossed a Shedog and landed a 24 incher right off the bat. Ended up with a couple more small ones and headed to the hill. Millertime picked up a red and a couple trout as well.
For the folks asking about spanish, they were airborne all over place around the main channel and the east river. Lots of bait getting caught up in the deeper spots when the tide was coming in.

Thanks for your support

Thanks to everyone that attending this years.........Raffle. I'm sorry I had to cancel the tournament at the last minute, but we are all still alive to fish another day, and many came home with some very nice prizes. Thanks for attending and on behalf of the Wakulla County Senior Services Center, thanks very much.

One special lady received a wheel chair that was contributed by the makers of the Fish Grip. We were going to have her attend the event but with the in climate weather we decided to for go the ceremony.

We were able to give away 6 kayaks, 4 Capt Dick Stakeout Poles, 2 Hobie Stakeout Poles, 6 Adventure Technology paddles, 4 MTI Calcuta PFDs and Sustain, Stradic and Solstice combination rods and Terramar and Clarus rods. Wealso gave away Nemire lures and many many other items in the raffle and the Captains Bag.

Next year we will make arrangements to have standards that will be along the lines of NOAA making a small craft advisory as a condition to cancel the competition and turn the event into a party and raffle so that competitors can decide to attend the raffle and party or not.

Thanks again to all that participated.

FCKA Classic

Well it was that time of the year again. The reason that we spend all our time, money and countless hours away from our wives, in order to possibly prove that we were slightly better or luckier than some of the regions most prominent kayak anglers.

I knew everyone was going to have their perfect plan trying to win Bill's kayak, so I spent weeks trying to conjure up my own. Unfortunately, Plan A didn't seem like it was going to work because Mother Nature wanted to make this weekend's fishing as difficult as possible.

So, get down to a well known island South of Tallahassee on Wednesday night and decided to give plan E a shot. My buddy Lewis from North Georgia who guides on the Ocoee River met me down so he could enjoy a few days of sunshine. :| Lewis isn't much for kayak fishing, but he went out with me Thursday morning to give me some company.

I have a kayak full of fishing equipment, gear and various electronic devices to load, and Lewis brings a PFD and breakfast. What's for breakfast you ask?

The breakfast of champions

Saw a few fish, but an early afternoon hurricane got us off the water a little quicker than we anticipated.

Friday morning, the calvalry joins us to give plan F a shot. The cavalry consisting of Popeye, Millertime, cygraphics, Millertime's brother with ADHD, Goodcall, Cueball, 8ball, Skunky, Shoalmaster, Shoalmaster's wife, Ms. Waltdawg, and Blake.

So we're off to fish, however, Popeye has a slight issue with his truck that required the help of a couple of FCKA 4WD trucks. Its a shame that we never got any pictures. By the time we get Popeye back on solid ground, another hurricane decides to visit, so we head to the hill to talk about plan G.

We did manage to find a fish despite the bad weather, but it was a day early and we didn't have the offical tourney ruler to make it official.

Took off for Medart around 5:30 for the Captain's Meeting because the 500 beers we brought weren't going to drink themselves. Enjoyed some good BBQ and tried to find out where everyone was fishing on Saturday.

Woke up early Saturday and heard the dissapointing weather report. I wasn't happy to hear the tournament was canceled because so many people were looking forward to some friendly competition and so many folks we know had put a lot of time and effort in to it, but I was somewhat relieved. After seeing how the weather behaved the two previous days, I thought the organizers made the right call.

It was good seeing how many folks love this sport as much as I do and I can't wait to do it again next year. Thanks to those of you who made the trip down. I saw a lot of familiar faces, but I met a lot of nice folks from Virginia, Georgia, Florida and other parts of the US that don't get to fish the forgotten coast as often as we do, so I hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as I did. Thanks to everyone who helped organize, and I hope that Liam knows that his low country boil will now be expected at next year's tournament.

Can't wait to do it again.
