And no maybe people dont come to Fl to hunt public lands but in case you dont realize some leases are around public lands. But by all means do your thing but as for me I will continue to say what I feel about the taking of game like that. Im sure alot of others feel the same way only I really dont care if someone is offended or not because you shouldnt take young deer like that. And the FWC guidelines are not always correct. Most(not all) of the biologists dont have a clue about proper game management anyway. But if you want to puff up and log off for good then thats your perogative. And in no way was I judging you. Just calling it like it is. Enjoy the rest of your season and good luck too you

RE: I am thankful for...
Well it seems I have touched a nerve here.
Slightly - what gives you the right to judge me or what I have done?
But that is just selfish if you have your meat already.
So how much meat is okay with you? The FWCC guidelines are there for a reason which is why I follow them. The more meat I take from the woods the less I have to buy and I share a lot of it with the less fortunate.
Maybe you don't realize but this state generates alot of money from people who come to hunt decent game.
Really? Folks spend big money to come hunt the huge bucks of Florida's public land? I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with you on that one.
I'm not saying you aren't blessed by having taken it but if you post it on a PUBLIC forum don't be suprised if someone calls you on it.
Call me on what, shooting a legal deer? If I can pull it off I'll shoot a couple more just like him before the season is out.

Look, I'm a meat hunter. I thought this was a pretty decent deer so I took him and that's that. I don't need anyone's approval and I am not going to go into a tirade in an effort to justify what I have done. I put pictures of my successes on this forum to share with others as folks seem to like to see them. If that is not the case, fine, I'll just sign off for good. I personally like seeing my friends having a good time hunting and fishing and it doesn't matter (nor should it) how big it is as long as it is legal.

ND

RE: I am thankful for...
WaltDawg (12/4/2009)
that will go great with a 18 inch redfish
Cute.

RE: I am thankful for...

Well Noledive I apologize for my 1st post. Please accept my heartfelt apology. Heck I would have done the same. But that is just selfish if you have your meat already.

Just because alot of others don't practice good herd management does that make it okay?If everyone practiced what you did we wouldnt have many good bucks. Maybe you don't realize but this state generates alot of money from people who come to hunt decent game. I'm not saying you aren't blessed by having taken it but if you post it on a PUBLIC forum don't be suprised if someone calls you on it. Im sorry if I hurt your feelings in anyway. I guess opinions are like buttholes, everyone has one.
I agree with you here. I just think you should have led with this. We defended NoleDiver because you started off with a short smart remark. At the same time, he did shoot a completely legal deer so the argument should be with FWC. As long as he is within the law he is okay to do as he pleases.

I personally would not have shot that deer either, but my hunting situation is different than his.

This is a great debate overall. The only way that you can truly manage bucks is to put statewide restrictions on antler size. However, I would bet that 95% of the larger deer taken in the state are all on private lands where more management practices are taken place. Not just with antler size, but with proper habitat management as well. You can't grow big deer if you shoot small ones, but you also can't grow big deer unless the land is managed well.

RE: I am thankful for...

Well it seems I have touched a nerve here. I would understand a little more if your freezer wasn't full and you took that deer. Heck I would have done the same. But that is just selfish if you have your meat already. And I have hunted and still hunt both public and private land and I wouldnt shoot a buck that young unless I didnt have any meat or it was someones first or maybe if it was deformed, hurt, etc. Just because alot of others don't practice good herd management does that make it okay?If everyone practiced what you did we wouldnt have many good bucks. Also be thankful that someone taught you to respect the game you chase and some manners.

RE: I am thankful for...

Well, if I hunted 'family property' and had the luxury of passing smaller deer I would be happy to do so. This deer was taken on public land where he is considered both legal and big so the when the opportunity presents its self you had better take it or you will never get one. Just for the record he came in with his little brother - a spike. Well, I'm a good shot and with a BAR I could have easily taken both deer but didn't as I saw no need. Besides, what difference does it make how big he is? Every deer I take I consider a trophy no matter the size. I consider the hunt more gratifying than the point score. Now if someone wants to keep point score like its a football game go right ahead, but that isn't me. A trophy is in the eye of the beholder. I am very proud and grateful of this deer as I am all the rest. If you take an animal and aren't proud of it you need to find another hobby. I think the point-obsessed hunters are in it for the wrong reasons.

I don't understand why someone would insult someone else's deer/fish/whatever. I thought only people from up north pulled that kind of stuff.

RE: I am thankful for...
Sean (12/3/2009)
Little Deer. Now it wont have a chance to grow into a really good Buck...Good Job!!!!
Don't come onto this forum, just your second visit here and your second post, and be "that guy". I echo what cygraphics said, to the word. If everyone isn't playing by QDMA or similar rules, of course the bucks aren't going to get huge very often on public land. In that same line of reasoning, I don't shoot jakes....personal decision. Not EVER judging someone that does, especially on public land. That buck lost his life, and his death shouldn't be scoffed at, it should be appreciated, which I'm sure nolediver did, otherwise he wouldn't post a pic of it and share with us.

RE: I am thankful for...
Little Deer. Now it wont have a chance to grow into a really good Buck...Good Job!!!!
This was actually my first thought too, but I'm pretty sure NoleDiver hunts on public property. So with that being said I think it's a fine Florida deer. Yes, it was young and would be bigger next year, but there is a good chance that deer wouldn't make till next year.

With all the quality deer management practices now many people wont shoot anything unless it's an 8 or better and I personally agree with that. However, it really depends on where you are hunting. I have the privilege to hunt on private property that is surrounded by well managed low pressure areas. We normally only take bigger bucks unless it's someone's first deer. On many public places you simply don't have that option. I'm sure NoleDiver would be the first to step up and manage like that if all others that hunted with him would do the same, but good luck with making that happen.

I remember growing up around here and a deer was a deer, didn't matter how big the rack was. Everyone was happy every harvest. I personally like only taking larger deer, but there use to be something special about every deer that was took and it was more about the experience than antler scores.

RE: I am thankful for...

Little Deer.
