Those of you that are deer hunting over in Gadsden better get to it if you can. Saw deer moving like crazy all weekend..... going to try and skip out of work early or come in late if I can this week. :)

till deer season. my girlfriend and I can hardly wait.. all the stands are up and ready.

a bit a bad news for me is I just found out i have a giant kidney stone. the doc said he would not want to push it. it measured 4mm x 6mm. so i am scheduled for surgery on friday the 18th. probably will need the weekend to recover.

anyway, good luck to all and those that have allready got something, congrats! i'll be back soon.

NWTF Wheelin' Sportsman Deer Hunt at Tall Timbers

This weekend was our annual Wheelin' Sportsman Hunt at Tall Timbers. Unfortunately the weather wasn't too friendly to us, but we still managed to have plenty of sitting time in the blinds.

We started off with an afternoon hunt on Friday followed by a dinner. Then we hunted all day on Saturday and then again on Sunday morning. There wasn't as many deer seen as usual, but there were still two nice bucks taken.

The hunter I was with didn't have much luck, but we did see a nice young buck that will be an awesome shooter in a year or two. We also saw turkeys, bluebirds, and other wildlife, but most of all we had a great time in the blind and throughout the weekend.

It really was a pleasure to hunt with everyone and I can't wait to do it again next year.

Here are a few pictures and hopefully FloridaFowler has a few more or can share his story of his hunter taking a buck.

I'm on a lease in Hardaway area. :)On openong day of bow season saw one 4 pointer.

A fellow in a club harvested a doe on Mon. around 10 AM.:P

Corn in north florida

i had five deer there together. 2 does, a spike, a 4 point and a 9 point. all the bucks are in velvet. wish i could afford a better camera for better pics.

hello. found this site yesterday while looking around. i thought i would join in.

i have the whole first week of archery off and will be in Levy county hunting with my brother. then when i get back i have a short wait and archery season starts here where my lease is. my brother took a few days off to hunt with me then. i've been tending my stands and feeders and the deer, hogs and turkey have been tearing it up. i've been shooting my bow almost everyday-getting in that practice. man i can hardly wait to get into the stand!

Sunday Morning Buck

This 9pt was trailing four does and another buck on a deer trail. As he neared my left side I stood up on the stand and shot. I think he was about 35-40 yards away or so. He then circled about fifty yards or so out my right side and stopped in an open area of the woods. I shot again and he fell. Turns out I hit him both times but the second was good for measure.

With only one week to go in general gun I would say it was worth the wait for this guy. Nothing beats getting a nice deer off a trail or in the thick woods when he's after the does.

Was able to go out yesterday evening for a little deer hunting. I was in a buddies climber stand and was lucky to see five deer come down a trail and one being a 3 or 4 pt. young buck. At one time there were four does around me, but something spooked them. This little one ran under the stand and stopped. Once they settled down back down I was able to slip out the camera and take a couple shots of him (he ended up being a young button buck). This was the best picture out of the five or six I took. His head was always blurry since he wouldn't hold still and pose for me.

Youth Hunt from December 6th - Provided by The Future of Hunting in Florida

The youth hunt that was held this past weekend was a big success. Five out of nine kids harvested a doe and the ones that didn't still saw deer & turkeys. The problem is that most of them had horns, which were not allowed on this hunt. I think that all five kids killed their first deer

Everyone had a good time and were well fed. I hope our upcoming Wheelin' Sportsmen weekend goes as well! As you can see, the kids had a good time.

The weekend was free to all nine youth, parents, guides and volunteers, courtesy of The Future of Hunting in Florida, Inc. and donations by Sportsman's Warehouse (Bill Colvard) and JSS Enterprises, Inc. (Steve Shafer). In the picture above, Richard Bush is the big fella on the left and his son Noah is the one on the right lifting the deer. Richard approached me at the open house at Beau Turner Youth Conservation Center last February and confessed that he didn't know the first thing about hunting but his kid wanted to learn. The kid (and Dad) are now officially hooked on hunting! If you know anyone else who is in a similar situation, refer them to me or Bill Cline or Kenny Barker. Kenny told me they are planning another youth hunt for 20 youth at some of the plantations north of Monticello (Pinkney Hill, Dixie, Allen Boyd's). Great opportunity for a kid to kill his or her first deer!

NWTF Wheelin' Sportsman Event

Every year the [url=http://www.apalacheelongbeards.org]Apalachee Longbeards Chapter of the NWTF[/url] puts on a Wheelin' Sportsman event. Tall Timbers and a few of the local plantations host the event and allow disabled hunters to use their facilities. This provides a great opportunity for some who normally don't get a to go hunting at all have a great chance at a nice deer in an awesome setting. This year was a great success and thanks to all who put this event on.

There were five bucks taken all together.

Close Encounters of the Fuzzy Kind

Was walking in to set up my stand Saturday for a bow hunt and came across a sow and two cubs. (Kind of interesting being 40 yards from 3 bears with a healing leg, 30 lbs. of crap on my back and a bow in my hand.)

Went back Wed morning before class and they came back. Here are a few pics of one of the cubs - closest was about 18 yards.

Beau Turner Conservation Center

New hunters looking for help and those with experience wanting to sharpen their skills are invited to attend the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Youth Hunting Field Day on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Tall Timbers Research Station, north of Tallahassee.

The FWC will partner with Tall Timbers and the Big Bend Youth Outdoor Foundation to put on this free, half-day event for kids of all ages and their parents who are interested in attending. Pre-registration is not necessary.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., expert instructors will teach the fundamentals of hunting deer, turkey, waterfowl and small game, and participants will learn about using dogs while hunting. They will get to target-shoot with bows, shotguns, rifles and muzzleloading guns, and there is even going to be a fishing pole casting competition.

Other activities include getting a close look at the inside of an FWC helicopter and seeing a K-9 demonstration by FWC law enforcement officers and their dogs. Participants also are eligible for door prizes and the chance on winning a youth hunt or rifle.

Sponsors and volunteers include the Future of Hunting in Florida, the National Wild Turkey Federation, Kevin’s Guns and Sporting Goods, Sportsman’s Warehouse, Talquin Portable Restrooms, Plantation Security Inc., Ducks Unlimited, Jefferson Long Rifles, Seminole Archery Supply, Tallahassee Bowhunters Association, Horse Creek Traditional Archery Club, Quality Deer Management Association, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Safari Club International and the Florida Division of Forestry.

Kawikee Plantation 7/18-7/20

A good friend from law school is an associate for the Butler Wooten law firm in Columbus, Georgia who happens to have a 4,000+ acre hunting plantation near Lumpkin, GA. Since it was the offseason and there were no clients to entertain, the five of us had the place to ourselves. We stayed in the 4 bedroom lodge overlooking the lake.

The ammenities included horseback riding, personal golf carts, jeeps, atv's, hot tub, 3 jon boats w/trolling motors, hog/deer/quail/dove hunts when they're in season. The hunts can be on horseback if you prefer it. They also have 25 English Pointers and 1 German Shorthair.

One of the partners sent us a picture of this monster caught a few months ago at the lake near the lodge.

We never got one that big, but KC started off with the weekend's first fish casting a buzz bait from shore.

We explored and fished Friday afternoon while enjoying a few cold beverages.

Saturday morning we went out on the horses and had a great time thanks to our guide Scott. He took this shot of the four of us. Winchester and I had a great ride.

FWC Offers Gator Hunt Classes

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is offering alligator hunters no-cost, three-hour classes to help them prepare for the Aug. 15 – Nov. 1 statewide alligator harvest. Reservations are not required to attend a class.

Attendance is not mandatory for licensed hunters, but the FWC recommends that participants attend, especially if they have not previously hunted for alligators. Class topics include preparing for the hunt, hunting techniques and safety, harvesting and processing, caring for your alligator hide and alligator hunting rules and regulations. Also, persons who do not have an alligator harvest permit can attend if they want to learn what hunting alligators is all about.
