Hunters Helping Hunters Dinner

I know this is last minute but this Saturday 20 November 2010, we are having a dinner at the Hunt Club Restaurant at 6800 Thomasville Rd. Just north of Tallahassee the event will start at 4 pm and run until 7 pm. All proceeds will go for the hunt and putting up the hunters in local hotels. This is the 7th annual disability hunt. The hunt takes place in Gadsden county on about 1000 acre. About half of the hunters are veterans which are picked by the wounded warrior program. The other half of hunters are picked by Buck Masters, we just put the hunt on and try and raise the money it takes to support it through donations and events like this dinner. If anyone is interested in helping out or going to the dinner, I have tickets that you may buy at $40 per couple or $20 per person. At the dinner we will have a raffle, some of the things that we are raffling off are a tree stand, black powder rifle, ground blinds and with and luck we will have other things up to raffle. Fishing advisory issued for Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa and Walton counties

News Release

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) advises anglers and boaters in Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa and Walton counties in Northwest Florida that oil from the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill could soon reach coastal waters of these counties. Oil spill trajectory projections formulated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) indicate that these areas could experience some amount of oiling in the next 72 hours, but these projections carry a degree of uncertainty.

In addition to the NOAA projections, the FWC is conducting airborne and waterborne surveillance to definitively establish the presence and extent of oil, to guide management actions. In the interim, the FWC cautions people to avoid any oil they might encounter on the water while fishing or boating.

The FWC, along with partnering agencies and fishery stakeholders, is keeping a close watch on coastal waters in Northwest Florida and is prepared to prohibit the harvest of fish if oil has contaminated the water to the point where it is not safe to consume fish. The FWC will decide whether to close a specific area to the harvest of fish based on a visual assessment that confirms a significant amount of oil on the surface of the water.

If a closure is necessary, it will be as small as possible and would prohibit all commercial and recreational harvest and possession of fish within clear and describable boundaries. Catch-and-release fishing would still be allowed in a closed harvest area.

Closed harvesting areas will reopen as soon as possible, but only after an official determination is made that the consumption of fish from those waters is safe. Any consideration of shellfish closures would be coordinated closely with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

It is also important to note that oil has not affected most of Florida, and there are still vast areas open to fishing and other recreational opportunities. The FWC encourages everyone to go fishing where the waters are clear and to enjoy freshly harvested Florida seafood products.

Florida Forever, the state’s premier land conservation program, protects our beaches, lakes, natural areas and wildlife habitat for future generations. Outdoor recreation is a part of our way of life- from hikers, hunters and fishermen, to children who play in parks. Unless we act to protect Florida Forever now, many of our beautiful natural areas will disappear before our children and grandchildren have a chance to enjoy them. Florida Forever and its predecessor Preservation 2000 have protected more than 2.4 million acres of land, much of which is open for public recreation.

For the first time in over two decades, the 2009 Florida Legislature provided no new funding for this program.

We need your help to save Florida Forever. First Turkey Competition

Spring is here and it is time to get in the turkey woods and harvest your first turkey. The Apalachee Longbeards are hosting our first ever "First Turkey Competition."

The competitionis open to any NWTF memberin north Florida and south Georgia who has never harvested a bird.The bird must be harvested in Florida or Georgia during the 2010 Spring Turkey Season.

Each participant registering, harvesting a bird and submitting the required information andpicture will receive a NWTF First Turkey pin, an Apalachee Longbeards First Turkey patch, an Apalachee Longbeards Certificate of Achievement and be entered for a chance to win our grand prize. Grand prize winner will be determined by weight, beard and spur length.

Grand Prize:

1.Full day turkey hunt for the 2011 Spring Turkey season.

3rd Annual Forgotten Coast Kayak Fishing Classic

The 3rd Annual Forgotten Coast Kayak Fishing Classic is March 26-27 2010 in Panacea, Florida just south of Tallahassee, Florida. We are supporting the Wakulla County Senior Services Center. In addition they operate services in the Elementary Schools for parents ot drop off their children early in the mornings before school starts and they operate the buses that provide transportation to many that need it in Wakulla County. If you qualify and it will get you a better prize than your place in the open division, then you will be placed in the Ladies or Youth division. The grand prize for the youth division is a Tarpon 100 donated by Sunjammers. When we firm up the ladies division I will let you know what the prize is. Minimum size for Red is 18”, Trout is 15” and Founder is 12”. It can be as long a fish as you can catch up to 45”. The rulers are 45” long.

REDFISH DIVISION
TNT HIDEAWAY has generously donated a Heritage Redfish for first place in the Redfish division which consists of longest length of a Florida Minimum legal size Redfish. Minimum size for Red is 18”. It can be as long a fish as you can catch up to 45”. The rulers are 45” long.

TROUT DIVISION
(A Pending Company) has generously donated a KAYAK (Brand pending) for first place in the Trout division which consists of longest length of a Florida Minimum legal size Trout. Minimum size for Trout is 15”. It can be as long a fish as you can catch up to 45”. The rulers are 45” long.

FLOUNDER DIVISION

FRESHWATER DIVISION

Also, don't forget that our banquet has been moved back to August 14 this year. So please save the date for the largest conservation banquet of the year in Tallahassee. Last year we donated $48,000 to in the ground projects from our banquet alone. Because of this our chapter cleaned house with state awards at the state convention. We were the highest in dollars raised vs. dollars spent in all the chapters in Florida. Not only that, we were 1st place in regular members and 3rd in sponsors..... Stolen Andros Backwater!

The show is hosted by Mr. Randy Hopkins who is a Retired Assistant Director of Law Enforcement for the Florida Wildlife Commission. Dear Club Leader:
The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA) is extremely concerned about President Obama’s choice for a powerful regulatory position in the White House. Cass Sunstein, the president’s pick to head the powerful Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA), has been an advocate for the animal rights movement and is an anti-hunter. As a part of the federal budget office, OIRA has extensive authority to block rules, including those that protect hunting and conservation.
Sunstein claims that, “we might ban hunting altogether, at least if it’s sole purpose is human recreation.” He also supports allowing lawsuits on behalf of animals, a right currently only extended to human beings.
Your support is needed to block him from being in a position to harm America’s sportsmen.
This is why it is crucial that your organization contact BOTH of your state’s U.S. Senators and urge them to vote NO on confirming Cass Sunstein as the head of the OIRA. Additionally, the USSA would ask that you encourage you to call both Senators’ offices in Washington, DC as well as FAX letters to their DC and state based offices.

The Shimano Fishing Tour will be stopping at Kevin's this Saturday, May 16th. Friday, May 15th from 5:30-7:30 pm, Shimano, Bacardi, and Kevin's are sponsoring a party at Calico Jack's 2745 Capital Circle. Come meet and visit with Florida guides Rick Murphy, Geoff Page, and Ed Zyak. Shimano rep Chad Linkous will also be in attendance. Free hors d'oeuvres will be served. Hope to see you all there.

The entry fee for the RECREATIONAL Division is $50 per person ($60 after May 15th). MASTERS entrants will receive 4 tickets to the Capitain's Meeting and 4 tournament hats.
The RECREATIONAL/ KAYAK entrants will receive 1 ticket and 1 tournament hat.
The YOUTH entrants will receive 1 tournament hat. Additional tickets, hats, and t-shirts may be pre-ordered or purchased at the event. Pre-paid orders will be available at the event.
Entry Fee is $300 for MASTERS Division, which includes one boat and four (4) anglers ($350 after May 15th).
No entries will be accepted after The Captain's Meeting on Friday, May 29th. There will be No Refunds of entry fees.

The MASTERS Division is limited to the largest, by weight, Grouper, Amberjack, King Mackerel, and Cobia. Cash prizes will be awarded for each fish category:
1st place - $1,000;
2nd place - $500;
3rd place - $300.
The RECREATIONAL Division is limited to the largest, by weight, Grouper, Amberjack, King Mackerel, Cobia, Trout, Red Fish, Flounder, and Spanish Mackerel. Cash prizes will be awarded for each fish category: 1st place - $500;
2nd place - $200;
3rd place - $100.
The YOUTH Division is limited to the largest, by weight, Grouper, Amberjack, King Mackerel, Cobia, Redfsih, Trout, Flounder, and Spanish Mackerel.
Trophies will be awarded for each fish category:

All fish presented for weigh-in must be fresh, in edible condition and must be caught on tournament day.

It's tradition 'round here. Thanksgiving and Demo Days! Come join the fun.

On Sunday, November 30, The Wilderness Way, Florida's Big Bend Paddlesport Outfitter, will sponsor a free Kayak Demo Day at Lake Hall in Maclay Gardens State Park from 10AM-4PM.

Event attendees can test-paddle a variety of recreational, fishing, and touring kayaks and attend mini-workshops.

At 11 AM, Doug Alderson, Florida Paddling Trails Coordinator for the Florida Office of Greenways and Trails, will show photos from the state's 40 designated trails. Alderson will also discuss the volunteer based Florida Paddling Trails Association. From spring-fed rivers to the 1600-mile Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail, Florida is endowed with exceptional paddling trails rich in wildlife.

At 1PM, Martha Haynes, Green Guide and Leave No Trace Trainer will present pointers on kayak camping and cooking. Haynes will serve up some tips on selection, storage and preparation of camp meals.

At 3PM we will be conducting a safety demo with kayak rescues, rolling and other safety techniques.

Events are free with park admission.

So, pack up your Thanksgiving leftovers for a picnic at the park.
